My virtual Caravan Site volt Mains Electrics My advice is not to modify or meddle with the Caravan main installation, leave it to a qualified person When you connect up your Caravan to a Site Mains supply you need to check the safety of your Mains installation, there are two important things you should do: It has a test button. The use of this will be explained in your handbook.. To check this I always use a socket tester, plugged into one of the Caravan sockets. This indicates if the system is wired correctly, if there is a fault it indicates what it is. Most modern caravans have two electrical systems, one for Mains Electricity V and one for the 12 volt side of things. They are connected in that there is a Mains powered transformer which runs the 12v side and charges the Leisure Battery. This charger is ‘on’ all the time and you should assume it can take 0. The Site supply can vary from 3 Amps to 16 Amps, so you need to check the amount available.
Using an Electric Hook Up (EHU) when Camping
But in addition to the volt electrical supply, there may also be lights, fans, a refrigerator, or other electrical devices which use a 12 volt supply, like that of a car or truck. A volt DC system powers the RV refrigerator to keep food cold while the RV or camper trailer is moving from place to place. The same goes for the lights and fans.
Hooking Up The Caravan Batteries I hooked them up in parallel as suggested by the salesman, with the regulator hooked up to one of the batteries, but after a year and a half it seems that the battery closest to the regulator is much weaker, as if it has always been drained and charged first.

As a Seattle resident, do you get doorknob sparks even in the summer? Crash all computers, kill wristwatches and light-dimmers? If so, would you be interested in playing with different ways to stop your static charges problem? I have some ideas for cures, but no victims on which to experiment!

This guide has been written in response to some of the questions that have been asked on various forums. It describes the electrical systems on a typical caravan and how they work. However, as caravans have evolved to the demands of the modern caravanner, these systems have become more complex, but a basic understanding of a simple system will help you diagnose faults even on complex systems in a modern caravan and help to maintain your caravan over the coming years.
Apologies to those reading that have some knowledge and find the early part a little simplistic. I have described a generic car and caravan wiring system, it will not be identical to your car or caravan. Each caravan manufacturer will have adapted a basic system to allow for more features and to take into account more complex requirements from its customers. The Caravan A modern caravan has basically three electrical systems on board. The first system is to provide the lights that replicate the road lights on your car.
The second system is designed to allow 12 volt lights and accessories to be run from a battery in your caravan and finally the third system is designed to allow you to plug in to a volt socket on a caravan site and allow the use of the same equipment you would normally just plug in to a socket at home. Skip forward a few years and a rear fog light became mandatory, so a further upgrade was made to the lighting electrical system to allow the rear fog light to be installed.
These were usually old car batteries.
#30 Electricity for campers and caravanners
Books 12 Volt Electrical Systems The majority of boats on the water today depend on electricity to some degree. Unfortunately, too many of those boats are operating with inadequate and poorly installed electrical systems. This can result in unnecessary problems that drain your patience and pocketbook and that can cause safety issues. A quick fix may alleviate the problem for the short term, but if the system remains inadequate, problems will continue to plague it.
To begin taking the right steps to achieve a good electrical system on your boat you need to: Determine your power requirements Provide adequate power storage and starting capacity Provide the proper charging that you need Be sure your wiring is adequate and approved for marine use and connections are sound Engage a qualified professional if needed Be sure that all safety requirements, such as the relevant ABYC standards, are met Your boat’s batteries are a corner stone of a good electrical system.

Translation Agency and Outsourcing Electricity in the Caravan: Of course everyone and their dog argued against me that it was simply not possible, but no, the solar panels are working absolutely magnificently and I am quite happy with them. My electrical needs are one to three laptops worth for 8 hours a day. For this I was advised to get two larger Watt solar panels, which nicely fit on the top of my roof. I got them installed by a welder, who designed it so that they could be tilted in various ways and directions.
Furthermore, by being down and flat, they are not really visible, and hence not an attraction for local starving thieves. With these two solar panels, hence at W, I find I can accomplish a lot during a sunny day, but what you need to do is look at consumption usage per device. Which is usually easy enough by picking up that little converter, the little black box between your computer and the electrical outlet, and read its power consumption levels.
So an input of 16V and 3. The W V inverter front left, W V inverter right, regulator in background all still to be organised My regulator has excess power output terminals, so when the sun is high and dry and I am not using its full use, a second output starts releasing the excess energy.

A friend of mine has a caravan she wants to use for commercial purposes next to the house and needs a caravan hookup. I wanted to talk through the installation with you guys please. Before I go on, a bit of background about me. I have taken and passed the 16th Edition and Inspection and Test. I know we’re onto the 17th Ed now but I do have electrical qualifications and am normally well disposed towards discussing issues like these.

Last updated on in Camping Tips Sometimes using electricity in your tent is essential, especially if you want to heat your tent in the cooler months. There are also times when a kettle, microwave, lights, and a small fridge may be useful on a long camp, as well as a bottle steriliser for babies. Not to mention a phone charger! What electrical appliances can you use at the campsite? The majority of campsites in the UK will provide a 3 pin connector rated at 16 Amps, which can provide a V supply, just like at home.
The key here is understanding how much you can plug in before the circuit breaker trips. This may be something only the campsite owner can do, which may not be possible between 9 pm and 9 am, or there could even be a charge for resetting the electrics. Working out exactly how much you can plug in and turn on requires an understanding of Ohms law and also taking into account any voltage drop which can cause a current increase with long lengths of cable!

Oct 10, Thanks for all the help looks like I will have to get a solar panel. As my hand book states that when the 12s scocket is pluged into the car it switches a relay to allow 12v to the fridge only. There is a 3 way switch that can be turned to van to run the 12v from the van battery another position to run the van from a car by passing the van battery the centre for when the van is being towed Your car switches a relay that supplies power to the fridge connection on your caravan socket your caravan also has relays being that its a model the relays in the caravan work from sensing the higher voltage generated when the car engine driving the alternator produces this higher voltage.
With the engine running the caravan habitation relay switches off the 12 volt power to the interior lights and sockets but it allows power to the battery for charging. The caravan Fridge relay allows power to be supplied to the fridge via the fridge cable from in your case the car relay. As stated previously you will not get much charge from the car into the caravan battery unless you drive for a very long time.
I’m in the process of putting together an illustrated article on how to survive indefinitely with out an electrical hook up which will show how to wire up the car, caravan and solar panel.
