Speed-dating to review course material and build community Posted on by Kathleen Susman This semester, I came up with a cool way to have my class get to know each other a little bit on the first day. My course is an intermediate-level neuroscience course that builds on knowledge they should have gained in more introductory-level work. I wanted to highlight particular concepts that they should have mastered and to gauge how well that knowledge was retained by them. So, I made up a question sheet, with space for answers, with one fewer answer than pairs of students. So, eight questions for nine pairs of students. The new pair introduced themselves and worked on the second question, for another two minute session. Speed-dating-style review of key concepts! Just enough time to address the question and do a quick introduction. Now, half of the class was introduced to each other. Class community building underway!

Colby Sharp My fourth graders are spending some time these last few weeks of school building their to-read lists. I have heard about book speed dating from multiple people on Twitter the last two years. As long as kids are getting the opportunity to preview and talk about lots of different titles, book speed dating serves its purpose. I place a giant stack of books at each table group.
When selecting books for book speed dating I try to find titles that: Are in a series that not many students know about New titles Books that I am surprised not many students have found during the year Favorite authors that my kids are not reading Blume, Dahl, Cleary, etc. Lots and lots of nonfiction Old favorites-books that kids loved at the start of the year Old read alouds-I love including the books that my students teachers read aloud to them in third grade 2.

Thursday, October 17, Speed-dating Speaking Activity! It’s been a busy one for me, and I’ve gotten a little behind in my blogging This one actually was inspired by my principal, who mentioned it in passing in one of our departmental meetings. I divided my class into groups of 2. To make it more fun, they had a simple costume to wear as well How old are you? When is your birthday?. I used a timer, and the interviewers had a certain number of seconds to ask their questions.
When the timer went off, the interviewers rotated to the next person and asked their questions again. After 5 rotations, I exchanged the cards the interviewers had with the questions on them in French for a card with the same questions written in English, and I asked them to try the last 5 interviews by trying to ask the questions with only the English prompt to look at. Once again I circulated around the room listening to each group.
Once the interviewers ended up with the partner they started with, they all switched places with the students who had the profiles and we did the whole thing again.

During the second week of class, when not everyone in our tenth grade English class knows each other well, I surprise students with speed dating. Speed dating books, that is. The students walk into our classroom to find the desks grouped into tables, covered with tablecloths, and decorated with centerpieces featuring flowers, candles LED candles , “menus,” and a large stack of books. Not only do students get to know one another better through this activity, but they also learn more about specific genres found in our classroom library and select their first independent reading texts.
At the close of the semester, this activity was rated by students as one of their favorites, so I thought I would share how I set up this activity with my high school students in case others want to give it a try with their students this fall. One of the first questions that I’ve got from other teachers about this activity has to do with the books themselves. How did I select my genres? Where did I get all my books?
So let’s start with the most important aspect of this whole activity – the books. Looking at my classroom library and what my students have been gravitating toward the past few years, I established ” menus ” for each table featuring a different genre. I have seven tables around my room, each featuring a different genre – realistic fiction, historical fiction, dystopian novels, poetry, graphic novels, self-help, and creative nonfiction.

Even the work has been okay. After a bit of context setting, vocab work and guided discussion in the first hour, I sit them down and tell them to write 5 questions for a first date. Because men are underrepresented in most of my classes, I have to even up the numbers and some of the women end up pretending to be male for the rest of the lesson. It seems to work well and students who barely say a word most of the time have surprised me, talking almost non-stop.
A few even seem to have fun. As soon as you walk into a classroom here you start to notice a few things. One of the most obvious is that boys and girls sit apart. This is university remember, not school. Their ages range from 18 to the mid s. They seem to lack a huge amount of experience which their Western counterparts might take for granted.
The boys will sit together, all clumped up in one corner at the back, while the girls will usually sit at the front, often with a row of empty desks separating the two groups. Quick class surveys can be a real issue. If they need to ask 10 people a set of questions and there are only 7 or 8 boys, getting some of them to walk up and speak to a girl can be painful.
