Jump to navigation Jump to search Location of the City of London area in London The City of London , also known as the City, or the Square Mile after its approximate size , is the area of London that originally lay within the ancient city walls. This independent part of Central London is known for its history and heritage, so is a must for anyone wishing to explore and understand London. Understand[ edit ] A dragon marking the boundary of the City Although greater London grew from this area, the official City of London itself has barely changed its borders in centuries and still follows the line of the old city walls to a great degree.
The walls around the city, built by the Romans, have largely disappeared but several vestiges are still visible notably outside the Museum of London; just near the Tower of London; and running part of the way down Noble Street and various place names and streets hint at their prior existence. Locations such as Aldgate, Bishopsgate, Ludgate and Moorgate are the sites of old gates in the city walls.
The City of London is not a London borough laws applying to London must define the city as “all London boroughs and the City of London” and has an ancient and unusual local governance, with rights and privileges greater than those of anywhere else in the United Kingdom.
A large portion of the line, between Paddington in central London and Abbey Wood in the south-east, is due to open in Autumn At the time of this opening, that new section and two other existing routes will be officially renamed the Elizabeth line, after Queen Elizabeth II. At each end of the central core, the line will divide into two branches: Part of one of the eastern branches, between Liverpool Street and Shenfield, was transferred to a precursor service called TfL Rail in May ; this precursor also took control of Heathrow Connect in May In August the opening of the core Elizabeth line was delayed from December until Autumn Prior to this delay, the Shenfield branch was to have been connected to the core to Paddington in May and the branches west of Paddington were to be connected to the central core in December , but this schedule is now unclear.
The project was approved in and construction began in on the central section and connections to existing lines that will become part of the route. These tunnels will run from Paddington to Stratford and Canary Wharf in the east. New nine-carriage Class trains will run at frequencies in the central section of up to 24 trains per hour in each direction.
It is expected to relieve pressure on existing east-west London Underground lines such as the Central and District lines , as well as the Jubilee line extension and the Heathrow branch of the Piccadilly line.

Skeleton service Excavations for London’s Crossrail project have unearthed bodies believed to date from the time of the Black Death. A burial ground was known to be in an area outside the City of London, but its exact location remained a mystery. Thirteen bodies have been found so far in the 5. Analysis will shed light on the plague and the Londoners of the day. DNA taken from the skeletons may also help chart the development and spread of the bacterium that caused the plague that became known as the Black Death.
Charterhouse Square lies in an area that was once outside the walls of London, referred to at the time as “No-man’s Land”. By , the area around Charterhouse Square centre had escaped its status as “no-man’s land” The skeletons’ arrangement in two neat rows suggests they date from the earliest era of the Black Death, before it fully developed into the pandemic that in later years saw bodies dumped haphazardly into mass graves.
Archaeologists working for Crossrail and the Museum of London will continue to dig in a bid to discover further remains, or any finds from earlier eras.
Wealdstone flooding: Debris lines streets in Harrow after water mains burst in Cecil Road
Twenty three skeletons have been uncovered lying in two carefully laid out rows on the edge of Charterhouse Square at Farringdon, and are believed to be up to years old. The depth of the burials, the pottery dated up until found in the graves and the layout of the skeletons all point to the likelihood that these skeletons were buried in Charterhouse Square during the Black Death Plague around The graves have been laid out in a similar formation as skeletons discovered in a Black Plague burial site in east Smithfield in the s.
